We dare you to wear...

A usamimi hairband with Lolita!

One of the latest style trends from Japan, usamimi hairbands are being seen everywhere this spring/summer! The hairband fabric is held up by thin wires to make the appearance of bunny ears - super cute! These hairbands haven't quite picked up in the West yet, so be the first to get a pair online (or make your own!) and start a new Lolita trend!

International Lolita Day

Twice every year there are two dates that the Western Lolita community refer to as "International Lolita Day", or "Loliday" for short. The first Saturday of both June and December are when Lolitas worldwide get together and celebrate. But why two dates per year? Answers have included some Lolitas would like to show off their coordinations in both the summer and the winter, plus the fact that Lolitas are worldwide and the weather isn't always accommodating.

The point of having a Lolita Day is to educate the masses about Lolita fashion while having an excuse to meet other Lolitas and have fun! Sometimes events and media outlets are involved, but generally it's just local Lolitas and their friends dressed up in public.

The concept for a Lolita Day in the West was first brought to light in 2005. After a positive response from the EGL community, the first International Lolita Fashion Day became a reality and an Official Loliday group was made in order to store photos, and remind members of the upcoming dates each year.

Almost five years later, Lolitas worldwide still celebrate Loliday and are spreading the world about Lolita fashion. Lolita is slowly gaining more popularity outside of Japan and doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon!

Ask Alice

Q: So my junior prom is coming soon and i want to wear a longer Lolita dress since i cant wear Lolita to my school. do you know any sites where i can find a Lolita like dress for my prom???

A: Since your junior prom is probably coming up fairly quick, shopping locally or on national websites is your best bet. My first thought would be to search your local thrift stores. Charity shops tend to carry items from all different eras, making it easy to find something unique! Keep an eye out for dresses from around the 50s, or high quality costumes. Don't be afraid to bring a photo example of your ideal dress, and ask the store workers for help.
It's not unusual to find lolita-esque items at every day clothing stores. Most towns have stores like H&M, Forever21 and Winners, which provide consumers with trendy and affordable clothing. If you can't find a dress that looks "lolita enough", you can always add lolita accessories or even have the dress tailored to make it look even more lolita. Sometimes a regular looking dress or skirt can be given an extra lolita edge by just adding a petticoat!
If you have enough time to order something online (don't forget that you might have to wait a week or two for the shipping), FanPlusFriend has a variety of long lolita style dresses for under $200USD. Blasphemina's Closet is currently carrying some gorgeously longer JSK's. The livejournal community EGL Community Sales is another great place to shop. Post a "Wanted To Buy" ad with what type of dress you are looking for, then cross your fingers and hope that someone has it at a reasonable price!

Sugar and Spice

Written by A Shy Lolita

Lolitas aren't always nice. But then again, does any fashion subculture exist where every single person who wears it, is nice 24/7? Of course not! Every clique, social scene and community has it's nice, and not-so-nice members. As cliche as some members of the fashion circle may be, there are always going to be ones who go against the grain. So how can one avoid those lolitas in the community who may not be the nicest people on earth?

Keep your life (semi) private. If you have a myspace, facebook or livejournal account, you can easily make your photos available to friends only. If you choose to add people you trust, and it will be less likely that your images or written words will show up on other websites. Friends-only posts can be also helpful if you want to try a daring look or ask a question about something that might embarrass you. But you must always remember that no matter what precautions you may take, anything you put on the internet can be found.

Do some research before posting in a public space. Make sure you look through archives and search for answers before making a post - especially if you are posting in a high profile community like EGL. Regular posters get tired of seeing the same questions asked time after time, and often tend to leave snarky remarks to the person asking the question. You can generally find what you are looking for with a simple search on google, EGL or flickr. Bringing up already-been-discussed topics is not the way to win people over.

Be helpful and kind. Even when you don't like someone's outfit, or think they need to do something differently, say it in the nicest possible way. This applies for both online and offline conversations. Lolitas tend to discuss meet-ups and local members after the fact, so if you want to make friends you should treat others as you like to be treated in return. Learn the difference between constructive criticism and just plain rudeness. Don't write off someone just because they're not wearing brand or you think they don't suit lolita. The next day they might be wearing an outfit you love, and you'll be sorry you initially snubbed them!

Now I'm not saying that all lolitas should be the best of friends, hold hands and sing coombya - I just think there are some small changes individuals can take in order to have a happier lolita community.
